How To Stop Being Absent-Minded!

Today, I want to talk about something so many have asked me about over the years.

The question is always the same: 'How do I increase my awareness in everyday living? How do I stop being so absent-minded?'

I used to struggle with this too. My mind was constantly jumping ahead to what was going to happen next, or getting stuck replaying things from the past. I wasn't actually living in the present moment. I was just going through the motions.

The Simple Shift That Changed Everything ~

Years ago, I received some instructions from my Benefactors. They told me to start creating little rituals.

At first, I didn't fully understand what they meant but I trusted the process, and I started small.

My first ritual began in the most ordinary of places: queues...

I decided that every time I found myself standing in line - whether it was at the bakery to buy bread, at the supermarket till, or waiting at a bus stop - I would simply be present. I would stop the internal clock. I would just be there.

Here's what happened: my mind got bored. Almost immediately! It wanted to run off, to plan, to worry, to do anything except just stand there. And I realized something crucial: the mind needs direction. If I don't give it specific instructions, it goes rampant. It tries to figure out what it needs to do, and before I know it, I'm completely out of control and lost in thought again.

So I gave my mind a job.

My Three Go-To Rituals for Instant Presence ~

1. The Soles of My Feet

The first thing I started doing was this: as soon as I was standing in a queue, I focused on the soles of my feet.

I would ask myself, "What do the soles of my feet feel like right now, inside my shoes?"

That simple question brought me right into my body. From there, I would take a few deep breaths...I would look around, I would listen to the sounds - the ambient noise of the supermarket, the birds outside, the wind or breeze...

And then, inevitably, my mind would start wandering again. And when it did? I didn't get frustrated. I just came right back to the soles of my feet.

2. Mindful Drinking

Once that first ritual started becoming easier, I added another one.

I decided that every time I was going to drink something - any liquid at all, I would really feel the fingertips of my hand holding whatever I was drinking from.

If it was a glass, I would notice: is it cold? Is it warm? What does the sensation feel like? And I would stay with that feeling as I was drinking. I would stay present with the sensation of the glass in my hand, the liquid touching my lips.

3. Expanding from There

I just kept building on these little rituals. And over time, something beautiful happened.

My awareness started to sharpen. It became clearer, more penetrating, more powerful. Nothing escaped my attention anymore. I started to notice things inside my own mind—my thought patterns, my personality habits, the subconscious programming that had been running me without my knowledge. It was like waking up to a whole new level of my own life!

The Truth About How Long This Takes ~

Now this doesn't happen overnight.

You have to be Patient with yourself. You have to Practice. And you have to Persevere. I call these the 3 P's.

I often tell people: give yourself 2 years. One year has 365 days. So 365 days x 2.

If you are serious about changing - if you genuinely want to stop being absent-minded and actually start living with awareness - then hearing '2 years' shouldn't be a problem. You're willing to put the work in because you want the result.

Don't be the person who has a big "rah-rah" moment, declares they're going to sharpen their awareness, and then forgets about it a month later. Don't let that fire fizzle out.

Stick with it. Stay with it.

You Can Absolutely Do This ~

Here's what I want you to remember: you have done so many things in your life before that you have been victorious at. You have overcome challenges. You have learned hard skills. You have grown.

You can do this too.

Practice. Patience. Perseverance.

Don't quit until you reach a level that feels good to you.

Until your awareness becomes a reliable, steady presence in your life rather than something you only access once in a while.
