Present & Grounded
Present & Grounded

Greetings,

I am Anaam from The Nagual Zone.

In a world that constantly pulls our attention in a thousand different directions, the ability to stay grounded is not just a luxury but a necessity. It’s a question that comes up time and time again, and it was recently asked to me by a guitar teacher friend who found himself thrown off balance after a draining interaction with a student. He had done his daily meditation previously & felt light and supercharged with energy, but he was quickly knocked off center by the nervous energy of another person. This is a scenario many of us can relate to, and it speaks to a core challenge of maintaining inner peace in the midst of external chaos.

The answer to this struggle, from a warrior’s perspective, is rooted in one fundamental concept: training. It’s the same reason an experienced shooter can pick up a pistol and hit a moving target without a second thought, while an average person would struggle immensely. The difference is not innate talent or luck, but relentless, repetitive training that ingrains a skill into second nature. This principle is at the heart of the Toltec system, a highly evolved and scientific approach to becoming a man or woman of knowledge. Unlike systems that feel like random pieces of knowledge thrown together, the Toltec path is structured with distinct modules, each one building upon the last, ensuring proficiency is achieved before moving forward.

At the very beginning of this path is the intense and thorough training in creating a field of deep personal presence and inner stillness.

This is the absolute prerequisite, the foundational ground upon which everything else is built. Without this basic ground in place, all the other amazing practices like dreaming and stalking become fairly useless!

The true measure of Toltec Warriors, the cutting stone by which they are judged, is the amount of inner silence they have cultivated. It’s about a vibrant, alert awareness in each and every moment, a skill that far too many people have only glimpsed or, worse, convinced themselves they have mastered when their lives show evidence to the contrary.

So, how does one begin to cultivate this level of functional presence? The advice for anyone who finds themselves depleted by others, is to start with something incredibly simple: the soles of your feet. The next time you find yourself in a situation where you might be thrown off balance, make it your training ground. When someone is talking to you, that is your cue to start training. The moment you feel nervous energy coming at you, your job is to shut down the mental chatter and become vibrantly alert. You can achieve this by turning your attention to the soles of your feet on the ground. Feel the connection, become aware of the entirety of your body from the inside, and just totally relax into yourself.

The Toltec Warrior listens not with the mind or with an aim to reply, but with the aim to train themselves into a deeper inner silence as the input comes in. It’s a shift from being reactive to being receptive in a controlled way. If you can stay aware of your feet and receive that nervous energy without letting it touch you, you begin to understand the invincibility of the Toltec Warrior. If, on the other hand, you find yourself drained, it’s evidence that your bank of presence was depleted, or you got so distracted by external happenings that you forgot to stay within yourself, leaving your gates open for that depleting process to take over.

Beyond this practical tip of feeling your feet on the ground, there is another powerful technique you can try instantly, right now, as you are reading this. It’s called the principle of two.

Look away from the screen and try to be aware of both of your nostrils as you inhale. Notice what happens to your mind. Or, try to be aware of both sides of your peripheral vision at the same time. You can also do this by looking at two trees in a forest and focusing on both simultaneously. This simple act of splitting your attention between two points instantly engages what some call silent awareness, the place where the mind just goes quiet and you become vibrantly alert. It only takes two to start!

This is the essence of staying grounded. It is not about avoiding challenging people or situations, but about training yourself to be so solidly rooted within your own field of presence that you become unmovable.

However, make no mistake, nothing in this system comes freely or easily. You will have to sweat blood for every tiny inch of progress you make. This is precisely why the Toltec system will never be a quick fix for the masses. Sometimes gaining that one inch of knowledge requires years of dedicated effort. But a Toltec Warrior accepts that challenge, knowing that true freedom and peace are not found in avoiding the storms, but in learning to stand unshaken in the middle of them.

See you next time.

Walk in freedom,

Anaam
